Frequently Asked Questions

Student FAQs

  • We do not place students in internship positions. You will submit your resume and/or company application to the companies you are interested in, just as you would if searching for a job.

  • The postings on our website are pre-approved for all Management majors with or without concentrations in Human Resources, and Entrepreneurial Studies. Each includes a job description and company contact information. We recommend that you also search for internships on Jobs4Cats through Career Services.

  • The internship guidelines, current course syllabi outlining the course requirements, and pre-approved internship opportunities for Management majors are on our website. Note that this is a 3-hour course; tuition is charged for the internship class just as it is for all other classes you enroll in.

  • Once you receive an offer you'll want to fill out the Student Inquiry Form. If your offer is for an internship on our pre-approved list you are not required to submit the job description along with the Inquiry Form (since we already have it on file).  If you receive an offer from a company that is not listed on our website you must submit a detailed job description on company letterhead for our approval in addition to the Student Inquiry Form.

  • We do not grant registration overrides until you have an approved internship.  Therefore, we typically recommend that you register for an advanced elective that would satisfy your degree requirements if you are unable to secure an internship.  Regular academic classes will close due to classroom size constraints and other factors, while the internship class will not. If you secure an internship later, you may then make schedule adjustments and add the internship class.

  • Yes. In the fall and spring semesters, there is a limit of 12 credit hours (or four 3-hour classes) including the internship class. During the summer, there is a limit of 9 credit hours including the internship. Also, in the summer you may enroll in a maximum of 3 credit hours each summer session plus the summer-long internship; you may not enroll in two academic courses in one summer session while completing an internship.

  • You are also encouraged to post your internship opportunity on Jobs4Cats through the Texas State Career Services office.

  • We do not place students in internship positions. Students will submit their resume and/or company application to the companies they are interested in, just as if searching for a job. You will invite your choice of candidates for interviews and make the final selection.

  • No, the internship does not have to be a paid position but it can be; it is completely at the discretion of the company. Keep in mind, however, that paid internships are typically filled more quickly than non-paid ones. There may also be special (federal labor) legal considerations should an internship be unpaid, so in those cases we recommend you consult with your HR and/or legal department to ensure there aren't any issue with you having an unpaid intern doing employee-like activities. Ultimately the decision on whether to pay an intern is completely up to you.

  • The internship must be scheduled for a minimum of 10 weeks and 200 job hours during the fall or spring semester, or 8 weeks and a minimum of 160 job hours during the summer. The internship may be either full- or part-time. It's important to note that the hourly requirement is merely a minimum, so if you want or need a student to work more than 200 or 160 hours, you are certainly welcome to include that as a requirement in the job description.

  • Because our internship guidelines require that our for-credit internships must be beyond the scope of the typical part-time or temporary job, we ask that you ensure that your intern's responsibilities are similar to those of an entry-level employee. Additionally, we ask that you confirm your intern has met the required minimum number of hours and work weeks during the semester, and also complete their end-of-semester evaluation.
